[Event Preview] Andre Saint Albin TONIGHT @ Coliseum Tallahassee

Tonight one of Tallahassee's favorite DJs is coming back to town, and for one hell of a fucking show! Andre Saint Albin is making his return this evening along with rising star Borgeous. As an ex-Tallahassee resident, Andre knows how to throw it down for the kids in this town, and boy does he do it in style.

Andre Saint Albin, formerly under the alias DJ Cross, was one of Tallahassee's favorite resident DJs. Performing multiple times a week, this guys was everywhere in town; from the biggest clubs, to the dopest house parties, you were always sure to see this guy throwing it down behind the DJ booth. If you missed his last appearance in Tally since moving back to Miami, Andre absolutely slaughtered a massive crowd at Coliseum before Cedric Gervais (who was a disappointment in comparison lol).

There are few parties I look forward to more than when this guy comes into town, not only because of how hard he throws down, but because of his unmatched interaction with the city of Tallahassee. If you have yet to experience a set of his, I implore you to show up early to the Borgeous show, you WILL NOT regret it.

Below I linked his set from this years Electric Daisy Carnival Las Vegas if you would like a little taste of what you can expect from him tonight.

Did MAKJ copy the drop for a famous remix of his?!

After the recent drama over stolen music from artists such as DVBBS and VINAI, the dance music community has been on full alert for the possibility of similar issues. It seems today we might have found one from a year ago that missed our radar. MAKJ released his remix of the popular song "All Gold Everything" by Trinidad James last year, but was the drop he used taken from a song released months before? The song in question is the Lookback Remix of 'Just Another Groove' by Mighty Dub Katz. Give each song a listen and let us know if you think!

Imagine Music Festival - SCHEDULE + MAP + TICKET INFO & MORE -

If you haven't heard of Imagine Music Festival yet, be prepared for one of the Southeast's premier new music festivals. This is the inaugural year for Imagine Music Festival, and they are looking to make a huge mark on the American Festival scene. Located right in the heart of downtown Atlanta, they have combined together three venues (Historic Fourth Ward Park, Masquerade Music Park, and Clear Creek Basin) that results in a picturesque, 17-acre park. From the incredible location, to the killer lineup, and pretty much everything in between, IMF is looking to blow the socks off almost every other music festival this summer.

As most would agree, the artist lineup is the most important part of any festival, and for their very first year, Imagine has delivered an absolutely MASSIVE lineup. Adventure Club, Destroid, and Fedde Le Grande are set as the weekends headliners, but that is only the tip of the iceberg as far as music is concerned. My MUST SEE acts for the weekend include: Infected Mushroom, Shpongle, Rusko, RJD2, Dieselboy, Caspa, Beats Antique, Protohype, PLM (Michal Menert & Supervision), and Emancipator, but there is so much more great music to be heard! Oh, and did I mention, they will be having CIRQUE USA perform world class cirque style shows all weekend!

IMF is set for launch next weekend: Saturday, August 30th, and Sunday, August 31st. Below we have included the official event trailer, artist schedule, venue map, and ticketing information to help you prepare for next weekend!

[8-20-14] Is Brillz Being Sincere About His Feelings On Today's Drug Culture?

I wanted to share with you something that was posted by Brillz earlier. I feel the same way about this post that I do about Diplo banning kandi. I would have more respect for them and their feelings on current drug culture if they weren't dropping track after track about being ratchet, getting fucked up, being wasted, poppin' molly, smoking weed, etc. Its not that I don't agree with what they have to say, but I don't think its sincere. In my opinion it's just another attempt to be publicly "moral" to enhance their image. With the growing popularity of dance music, individuals like Brillz and Diplo are becoming increasingly important role models, especially for the young kids who are now listening to edm. If they really wanted to make a change, they should take a look at the music that they are promoting to these young folks and start there. They can talk all they want about wanting kids to be more responsible, but in the end they are MUSIC artists, and kids are going to listen to the music they play and what the lyrics say to do. They set the standards for whats cool, and even if they don't "pop molly" themselves, little kids are going to think its acceptable because Diplo played it, and "he wouldn't promote it if it's really bad right?" What are your thoughts? Do you think they really want to make a change on the industry? I would really like to hear your thoughts on this.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Drugs.
I’d like to start of by saying that Im writing this essay simply because I have a desire to be a force for positive change. Even if I can make .001% difference in a few lives by speaking my mind, I’m willing to put myself out there for that.
There are no right and wrongs here. Im not telling anyone what to do, or not do. These are simply MY thoughts, MY beliefs, MY opinions. My hope is that it resonates with at least some of you. I’m very passionate about our community of artists, fans, and the events we all attend, on both sides of stage. Im writing this cause I care.
I’ve done a lot of drugs in my life. Ive done them cause of peer pressure, to be accepted or belong to the group, or cause a girl I liked was doing it. Ive done them to expand my mind, to seek a higher truth. I’ve done them to find an escape from my problems. Ive done them simply cause “why the fuck not”. I’ve had a lot of great times, and I’ve had a lot of really dark times. I’ve met a lot of friends, and at the same time drugs have torn great friendships apart. At times I have felt free, at times I have felt complete emptiness. It’s a double edge sword and Im not condemning it or condoning it, it’s different for everyone. I’ve been going to raves and parties since 99′ and I’ve seen a lot of shit go down. So let me offer you some thoughts about what I have learned in my own PERSONAL experience:
You don’t HAVE to do drugs to “fit in” or belong. You don’t HAVE to get high just cause your friends are doing it. You don’t HAVE to do drugs if you simply don’t want to. You don’t HAVE to get fucked up to experience the music or the moment. The music still sounds sick as fuck if you aren’t high!
I wanna be REALLY clear about something – We each have our own free will to do as we please, and I’m not gonna impose on yours. If you wanna do drugs -its your choice – I am not looking down on you or judging you, as I said earlier Ive been there. Just THINK! Act as responsibly as humanly possible!! I wanna repost what Bassnectar posted on his FB cause I think he nailed it – and I commend him for posting it – and for caring.
BASSNECTAR: How best to say this? Life is extremely precious! If you wanna get wild out in the heat, make sure you drink plenty of water and if you are planning to get high or drink alcohol, be careful with yourself. No need to overdue it or get sloppy or reckless with your nervous system, maybe try taking half as much, and letting life’s natural magic work it’s charms or maybe try a night off and see if you can have just as much fun without getting high. Also I think it’s fun to spend time lookin out for other people so if everyone out there takes a few moments out of their evening to doing something sweet for someone else, everyone is better off. Drugs are a tricky topic, but remember your health and safety is in your hands, so make good decisions. Ok back to your regularly scheduled program…
Mainstream hip hop and pop stars like Miley Cyrus aka Hannah Montana have glorified Molly to a whole new level to really young and impressionable kids. The culture is bigger than ever and there are even more sketchy shady mother fuckers who will sell you anything, cut with anonymous chemicals, and other drugs like meth and heroine (also cut with other crap), just to make a profit on you. They don’t care if you die. Someone said “Why should we be punished as “a scene” for the stupid newbie mistakes of a few kids who died and couldn’t handle their shit”. Sometimes these deaths at events have nothing to do with dehydration, or over doing it, or newbie mistakes. It’s simply bad shit and all of sudden your friend is dead, but you aren’t because all of our bodies are different. This is just a REALITY.
Music and drugs go hand in hand, they have for decades, and especially now in dance music. That doesn’t mean we just have to stand by and do nothing. I wish there was a think-tank of some sort that could work on issues like, drug education (if your gonna do it), making free water a requirement, and other ideas to help make these events safer for the audience and hopefully prevent as many unnecessary deaths as possible. Their must be some action we can take that neither condemns or condones but can simply provide some positive force in our community. Like the Switzerland or something, neutral. I don’t know all the answers, but I know I wanna help.
Today, I’m totally sober. I stopped doing hard drugs, I recently stopped smoking weed and even drinking alcohol. Since then I have heard things like “Oh Brillz is lame, he doesn’t get turnt” “Fuck Brillz, he don’t even smoke weed no more, thats whack” or “Oh just a water? , thats boring”. We all want to be liked, accepted and bond with our peers – the pressure is real. When I learned a few of my heroes didn’t do ANY drugs, it inspired me, and when I reached out to them they were supportive and it meant a lot. Im realizing its more important to me now, to reach my hand out there for those of you who want to grab it, than to worry about what anyone thinks of me. Thats just ME and MY journey.
To me “Turning Up” isn’t about getting fucked up anymore. Turning Up is about pure energy – its about getting as hype as I can get – its about writing the hardest banger I can write – its about throwing down the hardest set I can throw down – its about working as hard as I can work – its about dancing as hard as I can possibly dance. Its about being the best artist I can be. Its about being the best friend that I can be. Its about being the best HUMAN I can be.
Im sure a lot of you internet types are gonna have a field day with this, tear it apart and have a million rebuttals, comments, corrections, sadly even jokes, and thats ALL GOOD. There is a saying that goes “Opinions are like assholes, everybody’s got one” And if you think
Im an asshole, thats fine with me, you aren’t the first person who thought that and you probably won’t be the last. If you read this and felt inspired, if you connected with it in any way, then my goal is accomplished. In closing I want to add that drugs and alcohol while enjoyed “safely” and recreationally by many are also a life threatening problem for many. If you think you have a problem, don’t be afraid to ask for help. I did.
Be safe, your friend
Sami

[8-14-14] Dehyd-rage-tion

This is an article submitted to me by an individual known as "F5-NJA" regarding the recent ban of Camelbaks by music festivals, particularly Electric Zoo.

Dehyd-rage-tion

No adult is unaware humans need water to live. Sweating causes water loss – upwards of a liter per hour. Dehydration happens various ways, including loss of total body fluid, and rise in body temperature. This medical emergency has been fatal for many festival attendees. There’s an expression that something “flows like water.” If anything should flow like water at a festival, it’s water. The RAVE Act of 2003 clearly attempted to teach rave promoters a lesson: pre-asses a rave and provide attendees water, or else raves will stop. This lesson was missed. Selfish and irresponsible promoters neglect to provide access to water. This seems entirely profit motivated. Neglecting people’s health, in favor of a few bucks, is the most heinous part of any music scene. There are no excuses for dehydration persisting.

The ostensible point in writing about this injustice towards ravers is upcoming East Coast EDM festival Electric Zoo. EZoo promoters seem to be under the philosophy that any attention is good attention, pointing out tragic mishaps from last year in multiple social media posts and an anti-drug PSA. Realistically, there is no telling whether added security can change the mindset of belligerents, who conduct immoral activity. Rape and murder were the most tragic incidents from last year’s EZoo. These behaviors affected others. They are wrongfully being grouped with self-injurious behavior, such as drug taking. The most misguided EZoo policy is the banning of camelbacks. The direct results of this restriction is less access to water, possibly causing dehydration. An indirect result is a handful of people having to find another hiding spot for their drugs. Removing camelbacks is not a drug deterrent, it is an inconvenience. It has led EZoo patrons to wonder how they can sneak in water – an essential to life. Dehydrating people is guaranteed to exacerbate medical issues, but does nothing to prevent rape or murder. Drugs are only one safety hazard. They should not be so focused on, other concerns are forgot.

Harm reduction measures encourage drug test kits, spray sunblock, and other items with a main purpose of protecting. It is naïve to think these products can not cause harm, but it more naïve to pretend prohibiting these items does any good. If festivals merely took into consideration that dehydration is a more severe problem than drugs, festival stigmas could be reduced. Focusing on prohibition makes it appear as if festival goers are prioritizing drug use over safety. It builds upon the stereotype that all ravers are on drugs, in turn encouraging use. Focusing on reducing, rather than eliminating harms, can augment the negative stereotypes of festivals. We should strive to guide festival goers to prioritizing music and dance over substances, not put illicit drugs on a pedestal.

Event planners can also do more to actively check their patrons are safe after the gates. A feasible mean of encouraging people to leave densely packed stages between sets is through intermissions. A stronger approach is an active one, especially giving out water. The more active the approach, the more the festival appears to care about attendee safety. I witnessed this first hand last weekend at Moonrise Festival in Baltimore. I was among 42 volunteers who actively gave out water, ice, earplugs, and other small items throughout the festival. Essentially we acted as “mood adjusters”, giving people a better experience. We mostly squirted water into mouths, or dumped it on heads, while dancing and talking to others. Volunteers also talked with attendees having a bad time. I personally escorted several people out of intense crowds, sat with someone who felt uncomfortable from drugs they’d taken, and escorted several people to medical tents. The reception to us volunteers was phenomenal. “I’m comfortable talking with you,” said one attendee who was worried he needed medical help. “You guys make it look like the festival really cares about us!” said another attendee, upon getting some well-deserved water.

Festival goers cheered Moonrise volunteers for having the common decency of making sure their fellow ravers were comfortable. In a country that praised Japan for cleaning up trash after their World Cup match, but continues to actively act like litter is someone else’s responsibility, this is of little surprise. “Too many people are selfish at shows; they want to have the absolute best time possible, be as close to the artist as possible, and party as hard as possible, without much mind to their safety or that of that of those around them.” said Eric Bonnavent, Volunteer Coordinator at Moonrise Festival. Eric was hard at work throughout the fest – telling volunteers to go to stages they were needed at, going deep in crowds, and constantly moving. Eric continued, “We definitely prevented some potential bad situations.” It’s hard to disagree. As drugs cause people to lose control of their inhibitions, actively asking attendees if they’re in need of water prevents people from causing self-harm. The volunteers’ goal was to reach attendees before it was too late. Making themselves and others feel appreciated was an added perk.

While festival-sponsored volunteers may be new, mood adjusters at festivals are not. Hippies, festies, ravers, and ragers from all over actively care about the safety of others before their own. Kandi Kate, a vendor of her homemade Phat Pants, said of her experiences as a mood adjuster, “I’m just looking out for patrons.” Kandi Kate is an old-school East Coast raver, well known to many in the hardcore rave scene. “Water at festies should be free” says Kate. Like many others, Kate embodies the PLUR lifestyle. To get ready for a small upcoming Pittsburgh festival, FantasyLand, Kate is printing out advice for potential medical issues, buying dozens of water bottles to give out, and preparing her typical mood adjusters. These include intricate pieces of kandi, gum, candy, and a parachute that even has its own Facebook page. If more festival attendees carried the veteran PLUR mentality, volunteers might not be necessary. But the scene is rapidly expanding, inevitably bringing in new people. This is where the festival concerns lie: new comers, not veterans. We must teach these rave babies, not punish them.

The dehydration concern is heavily mitigated by providing water refill stations, as an increasing amount of festivals are now doing. However, cups and bottles must be replenished multiple times an hour to provide the liters of water some festival goers need. Sober and drugged out festival attendees alike are not interested in leaving a dense crowd to get hydrated, especially at large festivals. As such, water needs to be available everywhere. Camelbacks are the most sensible solution for this, providing several liters of water at a time and cooling the wearers back. Next are volunteers. After these essential needs are taken care of, we can educate safety measures effectively. You should never have to wait to hydrate.

[8-11-14] Artist Feature - NETSKY -

As I was going through my music library from years past, I decided I wanted to start a new editorial series on the producers that have stood out from the crowd; for their talent, their dedication, their creativity, and their sincere love for music.

My first feature is on none other than the Drum & Bass master, NETSKY! At only 25 years young, he is already a name known by almost every DnB fan across the world for his unique liquid-funk style of Drum & Bass. Since he signed with Hospital Records back in 2009 he has released two albums, and several singles that all have been extremely successful. Although his productions are primarily Drum & Bass, he also uses his musical talents to produce tunes in a variety of other electronic sub-genres. Not to mention he has a knack for choosing some of the absolute greatest vocals to use for his songs. What sticks out most when I listen to Netsky is not only how creative each track is, but also how evident it is that he has a true and deep understanding of music. The gift of today's technology makes it possible for anybody to create their own music, right at home, without even having to have a musical background. However, producers like Netsky demonstrate what is REALLY possible when you take the time to learn about music and music theory before ever stepping into the world of digital music.

Below is a collection of my favorite Netsky songs and videos for you to enjoy. Even if you are familiar with Netsky and his music, I really recommend scrolling and making sure you have heard each of these tracks.

NETSKY - IRON HEART

NETSKY - SECRET AGENT

SKREAM FEAT. SAM FRANK - ANTICIPATE (NETSKY REMIX)

NETSKY - WANNA DIE FOR YOU

NETSKY - THE WHISTLE SONG

NETSKY - WHEN DARKNESS FALLS

NETSKY - COUS COUS
